Allan
Stewart M.D.

Cardiac Surgeon

Dr. Stewart received his General Surgery training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and then specialized in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.  Following his fellowship, he completed advanced training in Heart Failure and  Heart/Lung Transplant Surgery at Columbia University. He joined the faculty at New York/Presbyterian Hospital from January 2005 until November 2013. He was then recruited to lead the Center for Aortic Disease at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, where he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery. Additionally, he also served as the Medical Director for Mount Sinai International. In the role he consulted throughout the world in cardiovascular programmatic development.   In 2018, he was recruited to Florida as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery of the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Baptist Health South Florida, where he expanded the clinical practice and doubled the market share, before moving to HCA Healthcare in 2019. He is currently the Medical Director and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at HCA Healthcare East Florida Division.

His clinical research interest in Aortic Surgery and transcatheter valves, have generated over 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He is a peer reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, BMJ, and JTCVS and was a site-principal investigator of many seminal clinical TAVR trials including PARTNER I, II, SURTAVI, and SENTINAL.  He recently graduated as a member of the inaugural class of the Surgical Leadership Program at Harvard Medical School.

Dr Stewart has operated and/or lectured on six continents in 21 countries. He has been honored in Castle Connelly’s Best Doctors in America and New York Magazines’ Best Thoracic Surgeon’s list for the past eleven consecutive years and is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, and American College of Cardiologists.

He defines himself primarily, as a teacher, which is greatly facilitated by being ambidextrous.  He trained over twenty-four physicians in aortic surgery; eleven of which currently hold the title of Director of Aortic Surgery in various departments throughout the United States, Japan, and Israel.

When not operating, he espouses heart healthy living and is a cyclist, marathon runner, and triathlete.

He was a featured surgeon in the medical documentary: NY MED, appeared on the Rachael Maddow show, FoxNews, Good Day NY, the Today show, the NY Times, the NY Daily News, and is the subject of the book, Barefoot in New York.
